USA authorities have accused Russian Federation of cyber attack on their voting system in IL and Arizona state. In the Arizona case, the Federal Bureau of Investigation notified state officials in June about what the agency called a "critical threat" to the state's voter registration system, which shut down on June 28, according to Matt Roberts, a spokesman for the secretary of state's office. The incidents led the Federal Bureau of Investigation to send a "flash alert" earlier this month to election officials nationwide, asking them to be on the lookout for any similar cyber intrusions. The intrusion led the state election board to shut down the voter registration system for a week. The Illinois hackers were able to retrieve voter records, but the number accessed was "a fairly small percentage of the total", said Ken Menzel, general counsel for the Illinois elections board. State broadcaster RTBF reported on August 29 that a vehicle forced its way into the site "before exploding a bomb" at about 2 a.m. local time. "One or more" defendants then allegedly detonated a bomb near the laboratories. "The explosion was extremely powerful". The NCIC is a scientific institution under the Ministry of the Belgian federal justice. Both attacks were claimed by the Islamic State. (more...)
