Lin ranked No. 870 among China's richest entrepreneurs, with a net worth of 6.8 billion yuan ($1 billion), according to Hurun Report, which follows China's wealthy. A former lawyer, Zhang was arrested in May amid tough nationwide measures aimed at curbing the outbreak and heavy censorship to deflect criticism of the government's initial response. Chinese authorities insist that they responded promptly to the outbreak during its critical first weeks. The new variant, thought to be more transmissible than others now circulating, was found in three people who had entered South Korea from London on December 22, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said on Monday. Three new cases each were from the United States, Britain and India, and 12 of the new imported cases were found in foreign nationals. As per the Health Ministry's data, India's total active caseload has fallen to 2.78 lakh (2,78,690) now. Ten states and UTs account for 85.26 per cent of the new deaths. With total recoveries nearing 98 lakh, the recovery rate has also increased to 95.83%. South Korea has also been added to the list after it confirmed the first three cases of the new Covid strain, as per the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. (more...)

Other countries have also reported cases of the new variant: on Friday, Japan confirmed five infections in passengers who had all arrived from the United Kingdom, while cases in Singapore, Denmark, Australia and the Netherlands have been reported too.
