As the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic spreads throughout Europe and existing infrastructure and services become strained by the disease, death rates are quickly beginning to rise. The total number could be much higher as the government reported 130,000 sick leaves associated with the virus, encompassing workers who are either infected or in preventive isolation. (more...)

Meteorological authorities in Japan issued no tsunami alerts, while US authorities canceled a warning for Hawaii . The private DHA news agency said the Istanbul chief prosecutor's office completed its investigation into the killing and charged 18 Saudi nationals with "deliberate murder" and two others with instigating murder. His remains have never been recovered. The latter announcement appeared to be a sign that the Turkish government could still indict bin Salman who has been accused of ordering the killing. (more...)

An appeal for volunteers to support the NHS during the coronavirus outbreak that was launched yesterday evening has reached 170,000 sign-ups overnight. He told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme that there would be a variety of jobs available, including parcel delivery and driving. He added: "The NHS Volunteer Responders is a new scheme set up so that people can come and help and to make sure that the NHS and local services that are needed get all the support they can".
