US stocks ended slightly higher on Monday as investors saw results from Citigroup kicking off the unofficial start of earnings season for the second-quarter. Though the Chinese defense ministry said the exercise was routine and had been long planned, Global Times' "military insider" said it was unusual for the ministry to proactively announce such drills. While there was no tsunami warning from the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, hotels and resorts along the southern coastline were evacuated shortly after the quake about 8am. "Everything has gone back to normal now". The quake did not trigger tsunami but the tremors were felt up to nearby Lombok Island and East Java province, he said. (more...)

Guinness World Records have taken away the title of world's steepest street from New Zealand's Baldwin Street, that had held it for over a decade. "You are bloody joking", he told the Stuff news website. Guinness World Records said the measurements were undertaken by an expert surveyor with appropriate qualifications.
