The absconding soldiers - two majors, four captains and two sergeants - fled in a military helicopter in the hours after the attempted coup to the Greek port city of Alexandroupolis, near the Turkish border, and immediately applied for asylum. Police say Shanitqua Steele of Needham was driving at the intersection of Washington and School Streets Thursday afternoon when she hit a woman, boy and third person before she tried to drive away. Good Samaritans were able to lift the vehicle and drag the victims to safety. Bystanders were screaming at the top of their lungs and some even jumped on the hood of the moving vehicle in an effort to get it to stop, witnesses said. (more...)

Ronald V. Bettig's body was found in the Centre County quarry Friday, police told Centre Daily Times. Investigators say George G. Ishler Jr., 39, of Pennsylvania Furnace drove Bettig to the quarry and pushed him off a ledge. Ishler faces charges including first- and third-degree murder. His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for August 31st at the Bellefonte Courthouse. (more...)

The department and outside counsel reviewed reports from the 2014 shooting and found that the seven officers broke Rule 14: "Officers shall not give false information". His request will go to the Chicago Police Board, which will ultimately determine the cops' fates.
