The deputy commissioner of public information's office says Officer Familia "was shot and critically injured" in the Bronx around 12:30 a.m. That partner immediately radioed for assistance, and an anti-crime team, consisting of a sergeant and a police officer, who were in uniform, confronted the suspect about a block from the shooting on Morris Avenue, police say. A growing number of Western politicians and global rights activists have expressed concern about the quality of Liu's treatment and have said he should be given the choice to leave China if that was the best option. Mogherini also said that China should "allow him to receive medical assistance at a place of his choosing in China or overseas", and that Liu and his wife should be free to communicate with the outside world. Two men were arrested in Monroe County, Florida, after Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers found three Key deer tied up inside a vehicle . The Key deer population is only 600-800. Each could see five years and a fine of $5,000. They face multiple charges including felonies and misdemeanors for injuring an endangered species and animal cruelty. (more...)

An Uber driver told police that Jennifer Espitia was sitting in the front and Cameron Espitia was in the back seat shortly after midnight when they began arguing, according to probable cause documents. When authorities arrived at the scene, Jennifer Espitia was rushed to the Harborview Medical Center, where she later died from a fatal head injury. (more...)

According to CNN , women in the White House are still experiencing a pay gap. That's below the USA national average of 82 cents to the dollar . Using the findings from the White House's annual report to Congress, which was released on Friday, the outlet found women working in President Donald Trump's White House earn an average salary of roughly $83,000, while their male colleagues earn an average of roughly $104,000. One arrested, one injured in Dallas hotel standoff

Dallas Deputy Chief of Police Rick Watson told reporters, "the suspect entered the hotel room and fired a weapon, striking the victim". Investigators are working to determine a motive in the shooting. The suspect surrendered when Dallas SWAT came in, and he was arrested. A reporter for WFAA-TV said on Twitter that a SWAT unit also responded. One person was taken out of the hotel on a stretcher, pictured, with non-life-threatning injuries. (more...)

Orange County's 10WAVY reports that17 people were in the hot air balloon's basket when some unexpected wind swept them off course from their landing and dumped them in the water. He lauded the efforts of pilot Russ Lucas, has more than 2,000 hours of balloon flight experience. A nine millimetre handgun was found between the legs of Jacob Kokotkiewicz, who was seated in the driver's seat of the vehicle. The couple's bodies were found in a parked Dodge pickup truck on the Interstate 40 around 9 a.m. On her Facebook page, Kokotkiewicz says she attended the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. The two human organs were in plastic bags inside the closed casket, which was unlocked. "I was pretty shocked", witness Chris James told local CBS affiliate WMAR of the gruesome scene. Investigators believe the painted white coffin was built for a child around 1 years old. The coffin was found across the street from a cemetery so police sent a chopper with search lights to check the area as well as a second cemetery. (more...)
