President Barack Obama, in one of his final acts in office in January, commuted her sentence after deciding that she had been punished enough for handing a trove of military and diplomatic reports to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. In a statement last week - her first public comments since Obama intervened - Manning thanked that former president and said that letters of support from veterans and fellow transgender people inspired her "to work toward making life better for others". No Japanese emperor has abdicated for two centuries and the law now does not allow it, but Japan is now considering legal changes to allow the emperor to abdicate. (more...)

About 100 people gathered in a plaza outside the courthouse after the verdict, chanting "No Justice No Peace". Police said Crutcher failed to obey commands, and Shelby testified she thought Crutcher was reaching for something in his SUV. Prosecutors asked Shelby on cross-examination why she, too, didn't use a Taser rather than a gun. "We need better training for police officers!" An autopsy showed PCP was in Mr Crutcher's system, and police said they found a vial of it in his vehicle. (more...)

Trump during his campaign had derided the nuclear deal as the worst he had ever seen and said he would reconsider it, but unlike other Republican primary candidates, he did not say he would scrap it. According to a CNN report, Macron's predecessor Francois Hollande had also appointed a gender-balanced cabinet with half of the 34 ministers and junior ministers being women. French President Emmanuel Macron also chose center-right Republican leader Edouard Philippe as his Prime Minister. A day after his inauguration the fervently pro-EU Macron made his first trip overseas, visiting Germany, the other half of the power couple driving European integration. (more...)
