Senate to send $1.1T spending bill to Trump

The lopsided, 79-18 Senate vote sends the huge bill to the White House in plenty of time to avert a midnight Friday shutdown deadline. This means they need only 51 votes to pass the bill in the Senate. But the top Republican in the House of Representatives, Speaker Paul Ryan, painted the accord differently, saying that his party's negotiators had been successful in ending an Obama-era requirement that an increase in military spending had to be matched equally with a boost in domestic funding. The number of girls in the latest release is unconfirmed, and varies from about 50 to 80. "I hope and pray that my daughter is among these released girls", she added. Trump took to Twitter earlier this week to complain about the bipartisan process that produced the measure but later changed his tone and began highlighting the spending that was added for the military and for border security. After winning a snap election in March of 2015, Netanyahu pledged to eventually pass a softer version of the controversial bill, but has faced opposition from some of his new ministers. Following the bill's approval Sunday, it is set to go to a preliminary vote on Wednesday, in the first week of the Knesset's summer session. The Justice Ministry will draft its own version within 60 days, and the two bills will be combined. (more...)
