As per the rule, a petition requires minimum 100,000 signatures within a one month from the date of posting to qualify for a response from the United States administration. Basit in an interview with the India's news agency said that as per the bilateral pact on consular access, cases pertaining to political and security issues are decided on merit, indicating that consular access can not be taken for granted. Pence also assured Turnbull that the US would honor a deal with Australia struck during the final days of Obama's tenure to help resettle more than 1,000 refugees.
