By accelerating the timeline for the Raqqa operation, and a concurrent campaign in Deir al-Zour, with the USA military's chosen local Syrian partners, the Trump administration could soon assume complete ownership over a large area of eastern Syria. In a Wednesday ruling on an appeal filed by the Venezuelan Corporation of Petroleum to Article 33 of the Organic Law of Hydrocarbons, the court stated that the National Assembly had authority to approve such ventures. Maduro himself had also tried to usurp the Assembly's power by creating a "Communal Parliament", but this move was rapidly dismissed as unconstitutional and, by the lawmakers it attempted to silence, as "nonsense". But lawmakers, both Republican and Democratic, said that any decisions on such a grant of protection from prosecution should proceed with caution, especially in light of the ongoing FBI investigation. In an interview with broadcaster CNN Turk, Erdogan slammed that European countries violated the European values by banning Turkish officials from attending rallies. Israeli officials said no damage was done to any planes, and that they'd intercepted one of the anti-aircraft missiles with an Arrow anti-missile system. It would not say whether any other missiles struck Israeli-held territory, but said the safety of civilians and aircraft was "not compromised". The intercepted missile was taken down by Israel's Arrow system, and the remains of the projectile landed in a village on the outskirts of Irbid in northern Jordan. (more...)
