Firefighters have had to battle the flames while facing winds up to 25 miles per hour and breathing in dense smoke, according to the Globe . French Environment Minister Segolene Royal, representing her government at a tribute for Fidel Castro in Cuba, said: "There were no speeches". "It was very simple", he said. Santiago is located on the eastern end of Cuba, about 880 kilometers (546 miles) from Havana. Crowds of Cubans lined the roads and stood on rooftops to watch Castro's funeral cortege pass by. Saturday morning. Michael Kosh, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, said the first of three weather systems arrives from the southwest this morning with widespread rainfall expected by daybreak. Those regions could see up to 3 feet of snow from westerly winds drawing moisture from lakes Erie and Ontario. Once the flow veers, the lake snows will drift further to the south into the western Southern Tier Friday into early Saturday . (more...)

Government forces have reclaimed large portions of the rebel stronghold in eastern Aleppo in a sweeping advance that has drawn condemnation from the West. The Syrian Foreign Ministry said it would now accept no truce in Aleppo , should any outside parties try to negotiate one.
