In a statement released Tuesday, Rubio says: "I ran against Donald Trump ". But Rubio didn't have any easy options. Ahmad Khan Rahimi took part in the hearing via videoconference from the Newark hospital where he is recovering from wounds received in the gun-battle in the town of Linden. Rahimi also faces federal charges in connection with the bombings, but he would have to be moved to NY before he can be arraigned on those charges. (more...)

Rahimi is a USA citizen born in Afghanistan, who attended high school in New Jersey. Ahmad Khan Rahimi's public defender pleaded not guilty on his behalf to charges of attempted murder of police. The September 29 peace treaty was Afghanistan's first since the Taliban's overthrow in 2001. The Taleban continue to wage a bitter insurgency nearly exactly a decade and a half after the US-led invasion that toppled the group in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, launching a major offensive on the city of Kunduz earlier this week.
