Major winter storm keeps trucking across the South

Power grid operator Southwest Power Pool, which coordinates electricity supply across a vast swath of the country, on Monday declared an "Energy Emergency Alert Level 2" due to energy shortages. Of the 25 000-plus megawatts of wind-power capacity normally available in Texas, some 12 000 megawatts was out of service as of Sunday morning "due to the winter weather event we're experiencing in Texas", ERCOT spokesperson Leslie Sopko said. The NWS in Dallas is calling the snow threat a historic winter storm . Snow has dominated the weather forecast in February, with flakes falling six out of the first 12 days. (more...)

The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 11.23 p.m. local time (9.23 a.m. ET), was located 45.9 miles (73.9 kilometers) northeast of Namie, a coastal town 60 miles from Fukushima, according to the United States Geological Survey. The Hamadori region is home to the quake- and tsunami-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant. He said there were no reports of major injuries. The case report form - which is available in multiple languages - had been created to report standardised clinical data from individuals after they have left hospital or after recovering from acute illness.
