"Fyodor told me I should be doing that", he said. Whitson responded, "It's actually a huge honor to break a record like this". Ms Whitson, 57, beat the previous United States record of 534 days, two hours and 48 minutes spent in space. "That's about as fast as I've ever heard, I wouldn't want to fly 17,000 miles an hour but that's what you have to do". Whitson is the first woman to command the International Space Station, and Monday marked her 535th day in space, one day longer than astronaut Jeffrey Williams, who previously held the record. NASA is building the hardware right now to test a new rocket that will carry astronauts farther from Earth than ever before, she said. The call was partly meant to discuss the "importance of encouraging women to pursue careers" in STEM - science, education, technology and math - fields. (more...)

In Europe thousands marched in London, Berlin and other cities in "March for Science" events accompanied by slogans such as " facts not feelings" and "join the resistance". Demonstrators in the US had hand-painted placards and signs lambasting Trump's decisions such as possibility of withdrawing from the Paris Climate Treaty, his promise to to cut $900 million from the Department of Energy's Office of Science or his executive orders deregulating coal waste dumping. Trump spoke by phone with both the Japanese and Chinese leaders and Chinese state broadcaster CCTV quoted President Xi Jinping as telling Trump that China strongly opposes North Korea's nuclear weapons program and hopes "all parties will exercise restraint and avoid aggravating the situation". The company is also bringing neural machine translation to Chrome web browser's auto-translate functionality.
