Almost two-thirds of shallow-water corals in a 700-kilometre stretch of the reef's northern section were lost to last year's bleaching event, scientists have said. The aerial survey of the Reef, the first for this year, found severe bleaching in offshore reefs from north of Ingham to the northern extent of the survey near Cairns. (more...)

"As I said yesterday, over the past couple of years we've seen, frankly, a number of foreign-funded NGOs who have encountered significant challenges to continuing their operations, and it's something we're watching and it's something we're going to engage with the Indian Government on and try to find a way forward", he added. Content delivery network services provider Akamai Technologies has published its State of the Internet report for Q4 2016. The report stated that the global adoption of 4Mbps broadband increased by 15% YoY. In South Korea, 83 percent of connections were also over 10 Mbps, followed by Switzerland at 73 percent, and 64 percent of Korean connections surpassed 15 Mbps. (more...)

The soil there is both dry and salty, similar to soil the plants would encounter on Mars. However, the plant wasn't otherwise forced to suffer - water and fertilized Earth soil provided additional nutrients and structure.
