About 2-1/2 minutes after launch, the rocket's first stage was scheduled to shut down and separate, leaving the second stage to deliver the satellite into its intended orbit more than 25,000 miles (40,000 km) above Earth. But Mercury is too small to see without high-powered binoculars or a telescope, and looking directly at the sun, even with sunglasses, could cause permanent eye damage. The ESA Observatory pointed its Great Equatorial Telescope, the largest-lensed in the United Kingdom at 28 inches, towards the sun for the first time since 1927 and used a special solar filter for the viewing during an eight-hour window from midday. A company webcast showed the 23-story-tall rocketsoaring off a seaside launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air ForceStation at 1:21 am EDT (06:21 BST). The Japanese satellite will be used to provide telecommunications coverage to Asia, Russia, Oceania and the Pacific Islands. The mission was a challenging one. Unlike the last time, SpaceX was not confident of landing the first stage, because of a hotter and faster reentry. While the rocket was on its way to orbit, hundreds of miles off Florida's east coast, the rocket's first stage booster successfully landed on a remote controlled ship. Elon Musk was jubilant about the mission on Twitter. SpaceX made its first booster landing on solid ground in December. As a result, it was a more hard landing, as the rocket was in geostationary transfer orbit, which required greater velocities and exposed the rocket to more heat upon re-entry. (more...)

Early Friday morning, SpaceX launched a Japanese satellite and successfully landed its booster rocket on a drone ship. It was filmed on April 8 after a space station supply run for Nasa. Speaking of which, in order to get to Mars, SpaceX is going to need to build much bigger rockets for that. SpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk was even more exuberant. (more...)
