Why tomatoes lose flavor in fridge: their genes chill out

If you keep your tomatoes in the fridge, you might want to rethink your storage technique. Chilling, Klee's group found, reduced the "expression" of several genes whose job is to produce these compounds. Researchers also provide solutions to solve the problem. The tomatoes stored for one and three days still managed to retain their flavor, but the tomatoes stored for a week under cool conditions exhibited dramatically reduced levels of volatile compounds, the chemicals associated with ... Orionid meteors to delight passersby as it peaks later this week

It's predicted to showcase the greatest number of meteors on the night of 21 October into the early morning of 22 October. The shower should be visible to the naked eye and there is no need for a telescope. Occasionally, the Orionids produce fireballs, meteors that shine extremely bright for a few quick seconds before fading away. The shower is active throughout October, but Nasa reckons the best time to see it will be on October 20 between midnight and dawn, when the sky is darkest and ... (more...)

Now when Samsung Note 7 owners go to an airport, they are singled out for having a faulty phone and non-Samsung phone owners are reminded that they're glad they don't own a Samsung device, he pointed out. Southwest Airlines will handle the smartphone as a hazardous material, but won't hold it for the owner, said spokeswoman Lori Crabtree. Ltd. Like the rings and numerous planet's other moons, the potential new moons are believed to be dark as well. Leading them to predict that this meant two new moons existed. (more...)
