Samsung Electronics today estimated that the crisis over its exploding flagship Galaxy Note 7 smartphones would cost the company more that U.S. $3 billion in lost operating profit over the next two quarters. Samsung usually releases a new iteration of the Galaxy S series in spring, so the company may have to provide a strong incentive to sell the 6-month-old phones, such as lowering their prices. If an airline representative observes a traveler with the device before boarding a flight, the airline must deny boarding to the passenger until the phone is discarded, the department said. The South Korean company discontinued the product earlier this week, less than two months after its August release. Samsung recalled the flagship smartphone on Tuesday because of incidents where the phones began smoking or caught fire, dealing a huge blow to its reputation. (more...)

Air New Zealand has also been in consultation with the NZ Civil Aviation Authority on this matter. Passengers will not be able to take the phones on flights or in their luggage to and from the United States from 16:00 GMT on Saturday. Samsung earlier acknowledged an imminent safety hazard, issuing product recalls on September 15th and October 13th. Samsung announced on Tuesday it was halting production of the Note 7 after some updated versions of the phones continued to overheat. (more...)

On Friday, Israel suspended all UNESCO activities in the country. Israel has frozen co-operation with the UN's cultural agency, accusing it of denying Judaism's connections to the religion's holiest sites. When the resolution was presented to the UNESCO Executive Board last spring, it was supported by Hollande and others. However the resolution , which was proposed by Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar and Sudan, has had widespread support among numerous 58-member body. (more...)
