Kerry recalled how the world's nations had worked together on climate change since first meeting in the 1980s in Montreal in a bid to protect the world's fragile ozone layer from ozone-depleting chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs. According to Peel Regional Police, emergency crews received multiple calls of a collision at Gillingham Drive and Bovaird Drive West, west of Hurontario Street, just before 8:45 p.m. A 24-year-old man from Georgetown was behind the wheel of the Kia, and had two female passengers in the vehicle. It is expected to hit Bermuda later on Thursday. Hurricane Nicole has strengthened into a Category Four storm, with winds of more than 215km/h (130mph). According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, at 5:00 pm EDT on Wednesday, the large eye of Hurricane Nicole was located about 240 miles (385 km) south-southwest of Bermuda, moving toward the north near 10 mph (17 km/h). A quick phase-down of HFCs could be a major contribution to slowing climate change, avoiding perhaps 0.5 degrees Celsius (0.9 Fahrenheit) of a projected rise in average temperatures by 2100, scientists say. Negotiators are weighing various proposals for amending the 1987 Montreal Protocol, implemented to protect the ozone layer, to freeze HFC production and use at some point between now and 2031. Yemen's civil war is threatening to further entangle the United States in it as American forces have fired missiles into the country in retaliation for attacks launched from Shiite rebel territory. "U.S. security cooperation with Saudi Arabia is not a blank check", said National Security Council spokesman Ned Price in a statement October 8. It's that the United States and Saudi Arabia accuse Iran of supporting the Houthis , who are a Shiite Muslim group. (more...)

Kerry arrived in the Rwandan capital Kigali on Thursday to join talks among roughly 150 nations negotiating ways to phase down factory-made hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) gases. The European Union also welcomed the deal. "We have come with an open mind and with the view that we must reach a fair and just agreement but what would a fair and just agreement imply?" said Ajay Narayan Jha of India's environment and climate change ministry. Now, sales estimates have been slashed to 47 trillion Korean won ($41.8 billion), with profits expected to be around 5.2 trillion Korean won (around $4.6 billion). The battery problems even plagued replacement phones issued during a recall last month involving 2.5 million devices.
