NASA cuts spacewalk short after detecting water in astronaut's helmet
- January 18, 2016
The astronauts were not in any danger, but NASA curtailed the spacewalk as a precaution, flight director Royce Renfrew said during an interview on NASA TV. Nevertheless, the incident echoed a scary episode in 2013 when Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano almost drowned inside his spacesuit. The latest incident was particularly unnerving since it occurred some 200 feet from the astronauts' exit, about as far as spacewalkers safely can go. (more...)

Support leg gives way as rocket lands on ocean barge
- January 18, 2016
Sunday's failed landing is a blow to the Hawthorne-based company's plan to reduce launch costs by reusing rockets rather than having them fall into the ocean. Fingers crossed that the Falcon 9 has more success on the sea in one (or both) of its next two missions. "Jason-3 is a prime example of how our nation leverages NASA's expertise in space and scientific exploration to help address critical global challenges in collaboration with NOAA and our worldwide partners", said John Grunsfeld, ... European ocean-monitoring satellite in orbit
- January 18, 2016
This will be a hard task to pull off, as the ship may be rocked due to ocean turbulence, further complicating the landing process for a rocket whose movement may be unstable. SpaceX came quite close to landing its Falcon 9 rocket on an ocean barge named " Just Read the Instructions " in 2015. From low-Earth orbit, the Jason-satellite will map the floor of Earth's oceans in detail and gather topographical measurements to help provide scientists with data to track sea-level rises from ...
