Its stronger winds bring more dynamic pressure on everything it hits, and there are simply more targets in the way the closer to New Orleans it gets. There was enough power to keep the pumps operating if needed, but little excess power to tap if other turbines fail, officials said. Forecasts called for anywhere from 2 to 6 inches (5 to 15 centimetres) of rain to fall in the New Orleans area, but Zeta is expected to be a relatively fast-moving storm, possibly mitigating the flood threat. But no, the moon is not going to appear bluish on that day! The moon will not (sadly) be blue, but it's the second full moon in the month, which makes it a blue moon (by some definitions at least, see below). Interestingly, the phrase "Once in a Blue Moon" owes it existence to this rare event. Whenever a Blue Moon occurs, the total number of full moons for that particular year becomes 13 which usually remains 12 under normal circumstances. (more...)

The reef is off the coast of North Queensland , and researchers from the Schmidt Ocean Institute first observed it on October 20. It is taller than the Empire State Building and nearly a mile wide at its base. "To not only see the 3D maps involved in the details, but also to see this discovery with SuBastian is unbelievable", he said in a statement. SOFIA is a heavily modified 747 jet outfitted with a powerful infrared telescope created to take measurements from high in the earth's atmosphere, flying up to 45,000 feet above ground to make accurate measurements above 99.9% of the water vapor in Earth's atmosphere, said Naseem Rangwala, project scientist for the SOFIA mission at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View. On the forecast track, the center of Zeta will move near or over the northern Yucatan Peninsula or the Yucatan Channel late Monday, move into the southern Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday, and reach the central Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday. The space agency team behind the Osiris-Rex project said preliminary data showed the sample collection went as planned and that the spacecraft had lifted off the surface of asteroid Bennu . The spacecraft then transited across the asteroid while descending about 805 metres towards the surface. The poachers set out as many as 10,000 traps, capturing 3,600 flying squirrels in less than three years.
