The agency estimated the asteroid to be about 2,133 feet long, making it bigger than the Burj Dubai, which is known as the tallest man-made structure in the world. The other side of that coin is that scientists keeping an eye on possible threats have to sift through lots and lots of space rocks that will never pose a problem for our planet. (more...)

- September 13, 2019

The tenable zone is the locale around a star where temperatures are adequately considerate for water to exist in fluid-structure on the outside of a planet. The exoplanet completes one orbit around its sun every 33 days. The life over this planet also depends on the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Water vapor was found in the atmosphere of K2-18b, one of hundreds of "super-Earths" - worlds ranging in size between Earth and Neptune - documented in a growing new field of astronomy devoted ... This artist's impression shows the planet K2-18b, its host star and an accompanying planet in this system. As the exoplanet resides in the habitable zone , the temperature levels will allow water to exist in liquid state. Benneke opined that the research scientists are conducting is aiming toward "being able to study real, true Earth-like planets ..." The star K2-18 is a red dwarf , smaller, cooler, and much fainter than the Sun . (more...)
First Detailed Images Of Ultima Thule Reveal Historic Find First Detailed Images Of Ultima Thule Reveal Historic Find
- September 13, 2019

It is more than a billion kilometres past Pluto , and 6.4 billion km from the Earth. The good news is New Horizons is healthy enough and has enough juice to visit another one. Better images should yield definitive answers in the days and weeks ahead. Now that we have this first image, we know that Ultima Thule is a bit of both: it's two asteroids that have collided and stuck together many years ago , becoming what's known as a contact binary . A group of astronomers may have found Earth's long-lost cousin, discovering the first ever "habitable" terrestrial planet with water in its atmosphere, according to new research aided by the Hubble telescope. The Hubble isn't sensitive to the right types of light to detect other important molecules, such as nitrogen or methane, so the researchers can only speculate about the precise composition of the atmosphere.
