The Senate confirmed Bernhardt as deputy secretary by a vote of 53 in favor and 43 against. In addition to being acting interior secretary, Bernhardt was also deputy chief interior secretary under Zinke, a role for which he received Senate confirmation in 2017. (more...)

In areas where the tiny plants begin to die out in even greater numbers than we've seen already, those organisms will have a much tougher time sustaining themselves, and the effects are felt all the way up to the top, including humans. A United Nations-backed panel of scientists said a year ago that it will require "unprecedented" action over the coming decade for the world to limit warming and stave off the most catastrophic consequences of climate change. Major Brazilian TV outlets obtained dramatic security camera video showing the outer wall of the dam collapsing and an avalanche of mud crushing trees, houses and cars in its path. Vale said it was also "fully cooperating" with authorities and that three of its workers had been arrested with two others "responsible for the audit company who testified to the stability" of that dam. And after carefully measuring the brightness and temperature of the background stars, they realized they had found something special - an entire galaxy that was hidden by the glare of NGC 6752. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, manages the telescope. Incredible footage from NASA shows the camera zooming in on the "tiny" galaxy, dubbed "Bedin 1", surrounded by thousands of dazzling stars. (more...)

These Pennsylvanian groundhogs enjoyed quiet lives until 1887, when a groundhog-hunting newspaper editor declared that Punxsutawney's groundhog Phil was the nation's only "true" weather-forecasting groundhog . After a year working on the Vera Rubin Ridge of Mount Sharp on Mars , NASA's Curiosity rover is moving on to its next assignment-but not before snapping what is becoming a hallmark of the NASA Rover's mission: the Curiosity selfie. The Curiosity rover landed on Mars in August 2012 and has more than 12 miles on its odometer. An global team of scientists found a tiny fragment - weighing less than an ounce - composed of quartz, feldspar and zircon in one of those moon rocks , according to a news release about the discovery. "However, a simpler explanation is that this piece was formed on the Earth and brought to the surface of the moon as a meteorite generated by an asteroid hitting Earth about four billion years ago, and throwing material into space and to the moon". Elon Musk , the founder of SpaceX , said that the top section of his company's shiny new prototype of a giant rocket was blown over by powerful gusts of wind overnight. The tweet below shows what the Starship prototype looked like after the heavy, sustained winds knocked over the nosecone. Musk followed up in a later tweet by saying that the "actual tanks" - the more complex base of the rocket - "are fine". (more...)

The total eclipse lasted one hour and two minutes (11:41 p.m. - 12:43 a.m.), with the greatest coverage of the moon happening at 12:12 a.m. Each moon has its own name associated with the full moon.
