Here's NOAA's 2018-2019 winter weather forecast
- October 20, 2018
In the winter, the NOAA said, typical El Nino conditions include wetter-than-average precipitation in the southern US and drier conditions in parts of the northern U.S. The prospect of stormy conditions in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic means it has the greatest chance of having colder-than-normal conditions of anywhere in the country, Halpert said. Antarctic ice shelf 'sings' as winds whip across its surface
- October 20, 2018
When they looked at the data, they realized the top layer of the shelf (called the firn) was nearly constantly vibrating, thanks to the winds travelling atop the snow dunes. What they heard however, the creeping "singing" of the ice shelf, is not at all what the anticipated they would find. The firn had been altered permanently, and the ice shelf song was changed permanently as well. (more...)

NASA's Chandra Observatory Back in Action
- October 18, 2018
NASA announced on Monday it traced the cause to a gyroscope glitch that generated "a three-second period of bad data that in turn led the onboard computer to calculate an incorrect value for the spacecraft momentum". After Hubble's gyroscope malfunction, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory has reportedly transitioned to safe mode for unknown reasons. On October 10, Chandra X-ray Observatory entered safe mode , in which the observatory is put into a safe configuration, critical hardware is ... (more...)

Chinese scientists, using DNA editing, breed healthy mice from two mothers
- October 15, 2018
According to the study published Thursday, researchers were able to accomplish the feat by genetically editing embryonic stem cells containing one parent's DNA and injecting it into the unfertilized eggs of another. Those cells , along with sperm from a second male, were then injected into an egg cells which had its nucleus removed. The genes of two female mice have been used to create living offspring in a Chinese laboratory. (more...)
