Tropical development in Gulf possible by next week
- October 07, 2018
As this area drifts slowly north through the weekend into early next week, shear will begin to lessen, and it's possible a tropical depression or weak tropical storm will form. Hurricane season started June 1 and continues through November 30. Major hurricanes to hit Florida in October include Opal in 1995 and Isbell in 1964. (more...)

First known moon beyond the Solar System discovered by astronomers
- October 06, 2018
The candidate moon , with the designation Kepler-1625b-i, is unusual because of its large size; it is comparable in diameter to the planet Neptune . First, after Kepler-1625b passes by Kepler-1625, the brightness of the star dims a second time by a smaller amount, which may mean that the exoplanet had an exomoon in tow. (more...)

Typhoon Kong-Rey unlikely to directly hit Taiwan: Central Weather Bureau (CWB)
- October 06, 2018
The current trajectory of Kong-rey will see it move from Okinawa in a northward direction toward the Korean Peninsula, the JMA said, before reaching coastal areas of the Sea of Japan. At this stage, it could still be a typhoon but is more likely to be a strong tropical storm with winds down to 115 gusting 140km/h. Richard Miles, spokesman for the UK's Met Office said: "It could damage infrastructure and bring a risk to life, mainly as a outcome of flooding and landslides". (more...)

Engineers design spacecraft to take humans to moon and beyond
- October 06, 2018
Deep space travel, such as a journey to Mars, can significantly damage the gastrointestinal (GI) tissue of astronauts, and raise the risk of stomach and colon tumours, according to scientists including one of Indian origin. According to a lunar mineralogical map released by NASA past year, water is present nearly everywhere on the moon's surface, albeit in minute amounts. (more...)

In a surprise, first alien moon discovered is big and gaseous
- October 06, 2018
Two Columbia University researchers presented their tantalizing evidence Wednesday. Instead, it looked like Kepler-1625b was orbited by a second body the size of Neptune - roughly four times the diameter of Earth. And when E.T. phones home, there's no reason that home couldn't be a moon. The pair would have a similar mass and radius ratio to the Earth and its moon but scaled up by a factor of 11. (more...)

Leslie may strengthen to a hurricane Tuesday night- U.S. NHC
- October 06, 2018
Leslie strengthened into a hurricane and is expected to maintain hurricane strength through the next 48-72hrs. It is located 510 miles east-southeast of Bermuda and moving toward the southwest at 3 mph. The National Hurricane Center is watching an area of low pressure in the southwestern Caribbean, giving it a 20 percent chance of developing over the next five days. (more...)

Found at Edge of Solar System: 'The Goblin'
- October 06, 2018
The researchers, including Sheppard, Northern Arizona University's Chad Trujilllo and the University of Hawaii's David Tholen, have also submitted a paper to the Astronomical Journal detailing their findings. She is nearly 2.5 times farther from the Sun than Pluto. Scientists have found mathematical evidence of a still-undiscovered planet at the edge of the Solar System and it explains the unique orbit of the objects in the Kuiper Belt. (more...)

Man uses meteorite as doorstop, finds out it's worth $100G
- October 05, 2018
But Sirbescu said she knew "within seconds" that this rock was special. The chunk of iron-which was confirmed as a space rock by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. A U.S. farmer and his son saw a shooting star come crashing onto their property one night in the 1930s. The man reportedly hasn't figured out exactly where the meteorite will end up, but a number of institutions are apparently considering purchasing it from him for display. (more...)

Doorstop turns out to be meteorite worth $100K

But that all changed when she was asked to examine an oddly shaped large rock that a MI man, who didn't want to be named, had had in his possession for the last 30 years. "I wonder how much mine is worth'". Sirbescu said this is the sixth-largest meteorite on record to be found in MI. It's a story that began out of this world almost a hundred years ago when a meteorite crashed down to earth near Edmore, Michigan . (more...)

Russian trio returns to Earth from space station on Sputnik anniversary
- October 05, 2018
About a month ago , cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station discovered a hole in the Russian Soyuz spacecraft that was slowly draining the station's oxygen supply. ISS astronauts are planning a spacewalk in November to gather more information on the hole, which was quickly sealed. The next launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan is scheduled for next Thursday. (more...)

Cancer Immunotherapy Researchers Win 2018 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine
- October 03, 2018
Allison and Honjo's work had both worked on proteins that act as brakes on the immune system - preventing the body and its main immune cells, known as T-cells, from attacking tumour cells effectively. "Brakes" on the surface of T cells essentially halt activation of the immune response when it's not needed. The cancer-produced protein suppresses the immune system's ability to fighting cancer tumors. (more...)

Scientists from the USA shared the recipe for Martian soil
- October 03, 2018
Indeed, a team of UCF astrophysicists has conceived of a standardized method for creating Martian and asteroid soil known as simulants . "It takes years to get there", he added. As such, UCF features asteroid and moon simulants , which are rarer and harder to find, on the list of items that can be ordered. The UCF team can mimic most ingredients and will substitute for any potentially harmful materials. (more...)
