Death Toll From Florence Reaches 32, Officials Say

One person was killed in Virginia by an apparent tornado whipped up by Florence, and six were killed in SC. One road was opened into Wilmington at least briefly, officials said , and items have been brought into the city by big military trucks and helicopters, which also have been used to pluck hundreds of harried people from atop homes and other structures. Donations made to the Charleston Animal Society will support animal rescue efforts in the affected areas of SC. Eli Russ, of Mamaroneck, is overseeing American Red Cross operations from drier land in Virginia . Lowe's has committed $2 million to support relief efforts, with the Lowe's Emergency Command Center expediting more than 2,800 truckloads of needed supplies, including generators, bottled water, sand, plywood, chainsaws, trash bags, gas cans and tarps. At least two people died from electrocution while attempting to connect their generators, while one couple died of monoxide poisoning from running their generator indoors. "I lost everything in the flooding", he said. I can see how badly we've been hit. "It happened so fast". The largest amount so far was in Elizabethtown, which has received 35.93 inches (0.91 meters). After blowing ashore as a hurricane with 90 miles per hour winds, Florence virtually parked itself much of the weekend atop the Carolinas as it pulled warm water from the ocean and hurled it onshore. According to CNN , the storm has weakened somewhat, but is still moving to the West. At 5 a.m. Sunday, Florence was about 20 miles (35 kilometers) southwest of Columbia, South Carolina . (more...)

But barber Josh Dais says the island's 5,000 residents now are trying to decide whether to flee ahead of Hurricane Florence . Despite the downgrade the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned that "life-threatening storm surges " would continue into the night, predicting "catastrophic freshwater flooding" over parts of North and SC. Parts of the Carolinas are expected to see 20 to 30 inches of rain over the next seven days. North Carolina alone is forecast to get 9.6 trillion gallons (36 trillion liters), enough to cover the Tar Heel state to a depth of about 10 inches (25 centimeters). (more...)
