SC has reported its first death from Florence . "We knew this was going to be a big storm, but it is going to be of epic proportions", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference in Raleigh. Millions are being told to evacuate as the North and SC coasts prepares for the arrival of Hurricane Florence , a Category 4 storm that continues to strengthen into "an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday night". Authorities in North Carolina said almost 814,000 customers were without power. "Two people in Wilmington were killed when a tree fell on their home", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told WCNC . Florence is about 644 kilometres wide and it's winds have dropped from a peak of 225 km/h to 165 km/h, reducing the hurricane from a terrifying Category 4 to a Category 2. The International Space Station tweeted this video early Thursday, showing the powerful storm from space. SC and North Carolina are evacuating people living in vulnerable areas along the coast. Florence had been a Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale with 120-mph winds as of Thursday, but dropped to a Category 1 hurricane before coming ashore near Wrightsville Beach close to Wilmington. On Thursday evening, the Neuse River burst its banks which caused rapid flooding in New Bern, North Carolina, forcing residents to flee as the entire city lost power. Prior to Hurricane Florence's landfall, more than 1.7 million were ordered to evacuate the coast. While forecasters have been keeping a close eye on the storm from the ground, the International Space Station watched the slow-moving hurricane make landfall from above. (more...)
