As of noon Tuesday, the storm was about 1,230 miles southeast of the Cape Fear region, according to the National Weather Service. Residents in certain areas of both states have been ordered to evacuate their homes. The United States was hit with a series of high-powered hurricanes past year, including Hurricane Maria, which killed about 3,000 people in Puerto Rico, and Hurricane Harvey , which killed 68 and caused an estimated $1.25 billion in damage from catastrophic flooding in Houston. Florence has maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour and is expected to continue growing as it heads toward the US East Coast. Maps of the storm's trajectory showed it most likely to hit the North Carolina shore near the SC border, making it the most powerful storm to threaten the USA mainland this year and the first of its magnitude in 29 years to strike the Carolinas. The Miami-based center said in its 5 a.m. ET advisory that Florence was about 625 miles southeast of Bermuda, moving west northwest at 9 mph. A hurricane hunter plane found Florence strengthening quickly, reaching top winds of 85 miles per hour (140 kph) Sunday evening after crossing the 74 miles per hour threshold from tropical storm to a hurricane earlier in the day. In North Carolina, emergency officials in Dare County issued mandatory evacuations Monday for residents and visitors of Hatteras Island, on the southern end of the Outer Banks. "Ive been doing this since 1983", Roberts said as he completed an order for another 18-wheeler full of supplies. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says Florence has the makings of an "extremely dangerous" meteorological event, the BBC reports. Steve Pfaff, a warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Wilmington office, warned impacts could include storm surge and wind damage, although the storm's path remains uncertain at this time. The storm was the second-wettest tropical system to affect the United States and the wettest tropical system on record in Hawaii, surpassing Hurricane Hiki in 1950. Two hurricanes are churning in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii, the National Weather Service said Friday. Interests are reminded to continue to monitor the latest forecasts over the coming days, as forecast changes to the track and intensity of Olivia will be likely this far out in the forecast. The hurricane center said it was still too early to predict its exact path. Bermuda and the US East Coast are beginning to see the first impacts of Florence . Dave Loewenthal, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Wilmington office, said the storm's track is still uncertain. Tropical Storm Isaac is churning towards the Windward Islands amid a forecast that it could become a hurricane before the end of the day. (more...)
