The first stage will return to a SpaceX landing ship which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida , while the second part of the rocket continues the journey with the Crew Dragon capsule . In the beginning, Sierra Nevada Company and Blue Origin, in addition to Boeing and SpaceX, attempted to provide cargo services. Since 2011, Nasa has had to rely on the Russian space program to ferry crew for months-long missions aboard the International Space Station (ISS), purchasing seats on ageing Soyuz spaceships for up to $85m apiece. SpaceX has a split-second launch window. Forecasters put the odds of acceptable launch weather at 40%. If SpaceX doesn't launch Wednesday, its next attempt would be Saturday. (more...)

The launch will see the pair leave the U.S. to dock at the International Space Station nineteen hours later, where they will spend 19 hours on orbit, with orbit-raising burns and also a manual flight test. The rendezvous with the ISS will be performed autonomously, but the astronauts can take manual control in the event that things don't look right. Recently, a weakening in the South Atlantic region of the magnetic field caused worries among scientists. However, satellites and other spacecraft flying through the area are more likely to experience technical malfunctions as the magnetic field is weaker in this region, so charged particles can penetrate the altitudes of low-Earth orbit satellites. NASA clarified that although people globally were under various forms of quarantine to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the astronauts' new constraints are standard. Steve Jurczyk, the agency's Associate Administrator, said they did "a thorough review of all the systems and all the risks" and unanimously decided that everything's in place for a May 27th launch. Researchers have found that the Earth's magnetic field is becoming weaker between Africa and South America, which is causing trouble for satellites and space craft according to the Independent. Researchers believe that this may mean that the anomaly may divide into two different cells. President Trump will travel to Florida for the historic SpaceX launch next week, the White House said Friday. The Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled for a liftoff at 4:33 pm EDT (2033 GMT). NASA's commercial crew effort builds on industry's space station shipments, now in the eighth year.
