John Herschel Glenn Jr ., the last of America's first astronauts and a former U.S. Senator , has passed away at the age of 95 after months of declining health that ended in hospitalization. With the all-business phrase, "Roger, the clock is operating, we're underway", Mr Glenn radioed to Earth as he started his 4 hours, 55 minutes and 23 seconds in space. (more...)

Authorities in Paris have banned cars from their roads for a third consecutive day now - and offered free public transport to all its residents as an alternative mode of transport. Motorists who ignored the ban aimed at cutting traffic were fined €22 (£19). The common currency used by 19 countries initially jumped on the announcement but soon lost all those gains to trade nearly 0.1 percent lower against the dollar, at $1.0757. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 15.43 points, or 0.08 per cent, to 19,267.21, the S&P 500 gained 2.28 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 2,214.51 and the Nasdaq Composite had dropped 1.39 points, or 0.03 per cent, to 5,331.61.
