Japanese chat app operator Line Corp soars in New York debut

The app has a lot of ground to cover in major Western markets, where Facebook Inc's Messenger and WhatsApp are dominant, and in China, where Tencent Holdings Ltd's WeChat is popular. Line was created after the 2011 natural disaster and tsunami in Japan as a way to overcome downed communications. One service allows users to create and sell their own characters, while Line's homegrown stable of stickers include the duck Sally, a sad-face bear called Brown and Cony the rabbit. (more...)

A polygamous church leader busted in a $12 million food stamp scheme managed to slip away from custody last month by using olive oil to remove his ankle bracelet, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said. Authorities say Jeffs likely used olive oil or another lubricant to slip off his Global Positioning System ankle monitor and escape home confinement last month in Utah. (more...)

Two Chinese UN peacekeepers and one South Sudanese UN worker were among the hundreds of dead. On Sunday the Security Council had asked neighboring countries to send more peacekeepers to South Sudan. However, Uganda's military said it it meant to evacuate its nationals trapped in the conflict. Kiir and Machar signed a peace accord past year and formed an uneasy transitional coalition government.
