Oil prices dived from $110 in mid-2014 to a low of $27 in January 2016, before recovering to $47 now. Some OPEC members have looked to Russian Federation to join in trimming its output. US shale drillers have already benefited from OPEC efforts to lift prices . The meeting got canceled after Saudi Arabia's refusal to join and posed fresh doubts on the much waited a deal that could see production being cut from current levels by more than a million barrels per day. The OECD report warns the global economy is stuck in a "low-growth trap" but argues that the prospect of fiscal initiatives - higher spending by governments - could push growth higher by 2018. But Germany, which is easily the bloc's largest economy and which is running a budget surplus, continues to dismiss the idea of a state spending boost to support growth in the rest of the single currency zone. According to the organization, about 36% of shoppers this year said all of their purchases were on sale, compared to 32.5% last year. The number of shoppers rose to 154 million from 151 million in 2015. To compete with Amazon.com, traditional retailers have been pouring billions into their e-commerce offerings. It's not a surprising finding given that Target tgt and Kohl's mss , among others, reported record online sales on Thanksgiving. (more...)

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics has said it will announce plans to increase shareholder returns on Tuesday, as the company faces calls from United States fund Elliott Management to separate into two distinct entities. Splitting the company could also help appease shareholders who have struggled through 2016, unhappy at the multiple raids of Samsung's head office in Korea as part of an investigation into a political scandal and the disastrous Note 7 launch and subsequent recall. Nationally, the number of police officers killed in gunfire is up 74 percent , according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. The press conference will take place at Volkswagen's headquarters in Wolfsburg on Friday at 0930 CET (0830 GMT). While walkouts on Wednesday and Thursday affect both long and short-haul flights, Friday's strike will only ground planes destined for short-haul routes out of Germany, the union said in a statement . Lufthansa spokesman Martin Leutke said the airline has made "plenty of offers" to the pilots, all of which have been turned down. Lufthansa was seeking to prevent the strike going ahead late on Tuesday after a Frankfurt labor court earlier rejected its application for an injunction. (more...)
