South Korea and Japan were on the verge of signing an intelligence-sharing deal in June 2012, but Seoul backtracked at the last minute in response to a public outcry. Earlier in the day, Seoul and Tokyo formally signed the information sharing accord , known as the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), the first military pact between them since South Korea's liberation from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule. Shortly before the rate decision, a chief adviser to Erdogan, Bulent Gedikli, said there were no foreign exchange problems for the state, banking sector or individuals and that it was wrong to present currency fluctuations as unhealthy. It also increased its overnight lending rate - the highest of the multiple rates it uses to set policy - to 8.5 percent from 8.25 percent. In evening trade, it has lost 1.0 percent against the dollar to trade at 3.4 lira to the greenback. (more...)
