Azar Jammine, chief economist at Econometrix, says the rand will depreciate significantly and "all hell will break loose" if Gordhan is removed as finance minister before the court case is concluded. He angrily rejected allegations that the NPA was steered by politics. Abrahams denied any mischief in the handling of the case, and said the surveillance unit acted in a "very unusual manner" and without clearance from the national intelligence services. (more...)

Winnipeg Police took two young people into custody after they were caught chasing people while dressed up as creepy clowns. The "killer clowns" craze has prompted dozens of frightened kids to call Childline. The number of creepy clown incidents has even prompted an announcement last week from McDonald's that Ronald McDonald would be keeping a low profile. (more...)

Total non-OPEC production was down by the same amount on the year - despite a Russia-led surge in September - due to sharp declines in the US and China. Speaking at the at the World Energy Congress in Istanbul, Putin commented that the current situation required a freeze or cut in oil production to maintain stability in global energy markets, saying , "Russia is ready to join the joint measures to cap production and is calling for other oil exporters to do so". It became clear that there was an intention within OPEC to limit output within a 32.5 to 33 mill barrels per day range, down some 0.5 to 1 mill barrels per day from almost 33.5 mill barrels per day produced by the members in August.
