The new cases, like the previously reported ones, involve possible transmission of the virus from men to their sex partners. The 14 cases all involve men who visited areas with Zika outbreaks, and who many have infected their female sex partners, who had not traveled to those areas. (more...)

SoCal Gas has pleaded not guilty to criminal misdemeanor charges stemming from the release, which prosecutors said the utility failed to report in a timely manner. "We do a lot of sampling, and we don't see 20 very often", said Blake, who has studied atmospheric methane since the 1970s. "What this shows is we do have to worry about these large leaks", said Steve Hamburg, a chief scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund. (more...)

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations agency in charge of regulating flying, issued an interim ban on Monday that prevents cargo shipments of lithium-ion batteries from being included on passenger flights. Two serious cases of overheating in lithium-ion batteries took place in January 2013, both on Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Tests by aviation bodies have established that lithium-ion batteries can self-ignite and burn with a heat of about 600C - close ... (more...)

Scott Kelly shows off the stunning zinnias he was able to grow aboard the station . While every space mission is historically significant, this one stands out. (more...)

Although the primary mode of transmission of the virus is through the bite of an infected mosquito, the Texas case prompted the CDC to issue interim recommendations on February 5 to prevent sexual spread of the virus. A spate of birth defects in Brazil late a year ago first triggered concern of health authorities, who suspect the virus has brought about cases of microcephaly, or babies born with abnormally small heads. Jurors deliberated for roughly six hours Monday and one hour Tuesday before informing Chief District Court Judge Maria Berkenkotter that they had reached a verdict in the case against Dynel Lane. "I do not hate Dynel, but I am angry for all the pain that she caused", Wilkins said Tuesday. Wilkins testified that they chatted for about an hour before Lane hit, pushed and tried to choke her, then used two kitchen knives to cut the baby from her womb. (more...)

Last week, the Consumer Products Safety Commission said it had determined that hoverboards sold without a safety review posed an "imminent hazard," and could be seized unless they were shown to meet two levels of safety certification. This past weekend, Shanna Abraham, 13, from Orland Park near Chicago tested her new hoverboard, which arrived late for Christmas after the South Korean manufacturers stated they were having problems with the battery. Annualized U.S. single-family home prices rose less than expected in November, a closely watched survey showed on Tuesday. "Seasonally adjusted, Miami had lower price [gains] this month than last and 10 other cities saw smaller increases than last month". Demand for homes is likely to spur more new construction, which has lagged behind in this recovery. (more...)
