In response to questioning from Sen. Members of the Senate Banking Committee were not satisfied by Stumpf's show of contrition. Eswar Prasad, a professor at Cornell University and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, told Xinhua that "we could see a rate hike at the end of this year" if the U.S. The Fed also projected a less aggressive rise in interest rates next year and in 2018, and cut its longer-run interest rate forecast to 2.9 percent from 3.0 percent. A leading Republican lawmaker in Congress on Tuesday said Wells Fargo (WFC.N) would be right to recover pay from executives involved in a scandal in which up to 2 million accounts and credit cards were set up without customers' consent. It was unclear how much of Stumpf's or Tolstedt's compensation would be clawed back, but The Journal estimated that Stumpf's total compensation while at Wells had been about $160 million. (more...)

Oil futures were sharply lower Tuesday, hit by dampened expectations that OPEC will come to an agreement to stabilize oil markets at its informal meeting on Wednesday in Algeria. Gary Ross, a veteran OPEC watcher and founder of US -based think tank PIRA, said Saudi output had risen too steeply in recent months and even if it were cut to pre-summer levels, Iran would see an offer to freeze its own output as unfair.
