The US investment bank Goldman Sachs in April agreed to pay more than $5 billion to settle similar allegations. Earlier this year, the DoJ agreed a five billion USA dollar (£3.7 billion) settlement with Goldman Sachs over similar claims. Because comparable criminal settlements with other banks have been significantly lower. Deutsche Bank booked an nearly 7 billion-euro loss in 2015, and its May annual general meeting saw shareholders berate managers for their performance. (more...)

While median household income jumped 5.2 percent past year, job growth has slowed somewhat. Low interest rates are still aiding the economic recovery and are not causing the economy to grow too fast. crude stockpiles helped assuage fears over a global glut. The company now has an order book of S$27.7 million, it said. The Bank of America Merrill Lynch MOVE Index, which measures price swings in US debt, closed Thursday at 61.18. (more...)

Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The suitor many feel is best positioned to take a run at Twitter is Salesforce .com (NYSE:CRM). That's slightly surprising as Salesforce "has virtually no presence in consumer media", instead focusing on "cloud-based computing services". Twitter is shopping around for a buyer. (more...)

Energy Minister Noureddine Bouterfa stressed that the aim from the informal meeting of OPEC in Algeria is to discuss development of the oil market, the minister didn't ruled out that this informal meeting may be turns into an extraordinary session at the opening, where members may then take important decisions aimed at stabilizing oil prices in the market. Over the past five days the S&P 500 added 1.2%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.8%, and the Nasdaq rose 1.2%. The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index ended down 99.25 points, or 0.67 percent, at 14,697.93. Murphy Oil rose $1.14, or 4.3 percent, to $27.55 and Transocean rose 51 cents, or 5.6 percent, to $9.65. Materials companies also gained. As ever, any decision by OPEC must first make sense for Saudi Arabia, which spurred the drop in oil prices in 2014 by abandoning its strategy of curtailing output in favour of securing market share. Venezuela and Iraq, which have been hard-hit by low prices, support the idea of a production freeze to boost prices. Baby step though this may be, anything that holds the potential to send oil prices up by $5 or $10 a barrel is music to the ears of Canada's downtrodden energy industry, not to ... (more...)

That's sending dividend-paying stocks higher. US benchmark crude was up $1.11 to $46.45 a barrel, while Brent crude, used to price worldwide oils, rose 85 cents to $47.68 a barrel. Part of it of course has been the huge contraction in drilling activity associated with falling oil prices, but the weakness in investment spending extends beyond that sector and I'm not certain of exactly what explains that.
