Inflation for the year is now expected to register at 1.3 percent, down slightly from June's projections and still well short of the Fed's 2 percent inflation target. Meanwhile the BoJ's effort to demonstrate they were serious about stimulating inflation while holding 10-year bond yields from going negative kept the yen steady. (more...)

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 48.59 points to 18,343.87, while the broader S&P 500 index lost 5.04 points at 2,172.14. It was the first time it has used that wording since late a year ago, when it most recently raised rates. (more...)

The death of Ventura County Fire Department engineer Ryan Osler, 38, marked the second wildland firefighting fatality in California this year, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). The California Capitol flags were flown at half-staff in Osler's honor. Capt. Ron Oatman not only knew Osler, but worked with his father, who also was a Ventura County firefighter. (more...)

The Sunnyvale, California, company declined to explain how it reached its conclusions about the attack for security reasons, but said it is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement. Hackers could also use such personal information to concoct bogus emails and send them to a person's Yahoo account, in what might be a sophisticated "phishing" scheme aimed at getting the target to click on a link containing "spyware" or other malicious computer code. For the year, the benchmark S&P 500 is up about 6 percent. "The market is taking a bit of a breather after a strong week", said Mike Bailey, director of research at FBB Capital Partner, in Bethesda, Maryland. The Nasdaq lost 33.78 (-0.63 percent) to close at 5,305.75, while the S&P 500 finished at 2,164.69, down 12.49 (-0.57 percent) from its open.
