Chairman Conaway convened two full committee hearings past year (June and October) to review foreign agricultural subsidies and their detrimental, trade-distorting impact on American agricultural producers. The uninsured rate in Utah has improved more modestly, dropping from 14.0% in 2013 to 10.5% in 2015. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that, in the second quarter of this year, insurers spent 6.7 percent more on healthcare and social assistance compared to the second quarter of 2015, totaling more than $618 million. Some 43.1 million Americans were in poverty past year, 3.5 million less than in 2014. The Census Bureau sets the poverty line each year based on age, family size and income. It is still lower, though, than the $57,423 that the typical US household made in 2007. Rising pay also lifted the poorest households, cutting poverty by the sharpest amount in almost a half-century. She remained cautious about the difficulties in the global markets and its impact on the US economy.
