TVs, cars and sneakers sail about 10 days to reach Los Angeles from Asia, while they could take as many as 30 days to Rotterdam. If Hanjin doesn't offload here, then it can't be used to ship Washington products overseas either. With about 5 percent of ships in the global trading fleet sitting idle, he believes there is room to take over Hanjin's capacity and carriers already are discussing the possibility of adding ships. South Korean regulators allowed trading to be resumed Monday after Hanjin's court receivership was granted, but the share price plummeted by the daily limit of 30 per cent shortly after the market opened. The company is at risk of creditor action in the US, and its current financial state renders it impossible to repay 3.14 trillion won of loans maturing within one year, the filing showed. (more...)

Average hourly earnings rose 4 cents to $25.73 and are up 2.4% the past year, down from 2.6% in July. The payrolls data were contending with a pattern of August disappointment, with the survey median overshooting the first print for the month in each of the last five years, by an average 47,000. In a much-anticipated speech Friday Yellen said a pick-up in the world's top economy and an improvement in the jobs market meant "the case for an increase in the federal funds rate has strengthened in recent months". The weaker yen boosted Japan's exporters, sending the Nikkei stock index 2.3 percent higher at the close. Apple shares were last down just under 1 percent. (more...)

The fighting between Turkey's military and the Kurdish forces has raised concern in the United States that it could detract them from the battle against the Islamic State group and frustrate anti-IS efforts by the USA -led coalition. According to the YPG leadership, four of its fighters were arrested by Turkey-backed rebels last Monday while they were trying to evacuate civilians from war-torn parts of the Jarablus city in northern Syria.
