Supreme Court dismisses Indigenous appeal of Trans Mountain pipeline approval

The court dismissed the appeal this morning from the Squamish Nation, Tsleil-Waututh Nation, the Ts'elxweyeqw Tribes and Coldwater Indian Band, effectively ending the years-long legal battle over the project. Natural Resources Minister Seamus O'Regan says the federal government welcomes the Supreme Court of Canada's decision not to hear an appeal. Some concerns the community has include the project's effect on drinking water and marine life-especially BC's Southern Resident killer whales. (more...)

The Nasdaq rose 450.41 points, or 4.6%. The tech-rich Nasdaq climbed 1.3 percent to 10,290.39, while the broad-based S&P 500 was up 1.5 percent at 3,161.21. The number of applications for jobless benefits filed every week has come down from a peak of almost 7 million in late March, but has stabilized near a historically high 1.5 million, an indication that companies are continuing to cut jobs. PMIs are an indicator of private sector activity and are given on a scale of 1 to 100. New export business also expanded for the first time since January on firmer foreign demand, in contrast to overseas orders for manufactured goods, which continued to contract as many of China's trading partners remained in lockdowns. Oil prices rose on Thursday, reversing early losses, as a sharp drop in oil stockpiles outweighed concerns that a spike in US coronavirus infections and revived lockdown measures in California could stall a recovery in fuel demand. This signals that USA crude oil production could remain weak in the following weeks by helping to trim some of the glut of supply in the global oil market and relieve some of the pressure on crude prices.
