US Fed Chair says case for another rate hike has strengthened

Federal Reserve: In Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Yellen told a conference of central bankers that the US economy might be strong enough for an interest rate hike. "In contrast, the federal funds rate averaged more than 7% between 1965 and 2000". A rise in rates would increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion, while simultaneous boosting the dollar, which the metal is priced in, making gold more expensive to foreign currencies. Autonomous taxi service trial begins in Singapore

The autonomous vehicle software startup and spinoff of the MIT made its public trial and it is now underway. Although the cars will be self-driving, there'll still be a driver in the auto available to act as a backup in case of emergency and to monitor the performance. (more...)

Couple suspected of kidnapping three children in police custody

Brittany Humphrey and Joshua Robertson, who were wanted for allegedly kidnapping three children after the killing of their mother, have been arrested in Pueblo, Colorado, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Information Bureau. Ryle Watkins, 5, Brayden Watkins, 3, and Joslynn Watkins, 2, were found safe Wednesday at a motel in Albuquerque. The children's father died previously, but they have a grandmother in Fresno, authorities said. (more...)

The first company to get permission from the government of Singapore to test self-driving cars, nuTonomy is a software developer set up in 2013 by two researchers from MIT who specialise in robotics. Besides Singapore, nuTonomy is operating self-driving cars in MI and the United Kingdom, where it tests software in partnership with major automotive manufacturers such as Jaguar Land Rover. The EF3 tornado that swept through the south side of Kokomo, Indiana, on Wednesday afternoon packing winds as high as 152 miles per hour toppled a Starbucks coffee shop and tore apart numerous homes. But players and coaches from both teams will volunteer for cleanup duties. Authorities say between 15 and 20 people suffered injuries but none were severe. (more...)

She also noted that while inflation is still running below the Fed's target of 2%, it is being depressed mainly by temporary factors. David Donabedian, chief financial officer of Atlantic Trust Private Wealth Management, said in a note that the market's initially positive reaction may have been attributable to "her relaxed view on inflation", which suggested "a very slow path toward higher rates". So I think that is affecting global pricing. However she added she doesn't want to raise rates so much that the Fed slows down an already slow-growing economy.
