Collection of 10 per cent tariffs will start on September 24 but the rate will increase to 25 per cent by the end of the year, allowing U.S. In a pair of tweets, Trump continued to make the case that tariffs largely harm the countries that are taxed, saying the impact on the US economy has been "almost unnoticeable". Finance minister Arun Jaitley said the government had been careful in not merging weak banks. This is the third major restructuring in the public sector banking space undertaken by this government. Financial Services Secretary Rajiv Kumar said bank boards of the three banks will examine the amalgamation proposal. The PSU banks are in news today ahead of merger of Bank of Baroda with Dena Bank & Vijaya Bank. (more...)

Oil prices broke the $80 a barrel barrier yesterday as the storm, along with Donald Trump's sanctions on Iran , bumped prices. Supply concerns were stoked by data showing United States crude production fell by 100,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 10.9 million bpd last week as the industry faced pipeline capacity constraints. Karnataka's chief minister made the decision to cut down the petrol and diesel prices in an apparent reaction to the political pressure as Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal governments have reduced fuel prices . Both petrol and diesel prices are at all-time highs. A combination of a dip in rupee value against the United States dollar and rise in crude oil prices has led to a spike in pump prices since mid-August. (more...)

Needles have been found in strawberries sold in Woolworths stores. Queensland's chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said strawberries would be back on shelves on Thursday and urged people to throw out any frozen fruit or fruit purchased in the past week. (more...)

Volkswagen Group of America CEO Hinrich Woebcken, in a statement, said there are no plans to replace the Beetle as the company focuses on becoming "a full-line, family-focused automaker in the U.S." and ramps up electrification efforts. Design work on what would be the Beetle began in the 1930s after Hitler had ordered that a Volks Wagen (German for people's car) be built that was affordable for all Germans. (more...)
