Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, revoked the licences of Qatar Airways and ordered its offices to be closed within 48 hours, a day after banning all Qatari planes from landing at its airports. All of the countries are friendly with the US, putting Trump in a potentially awkward position. It was the latest example of the tightrope that USA officials are walking as Trump's tweets raise questions about existing US policy and the carefully scripted talking points used to explain it. The International Monetary Fund expects this year's economic growth to decline to 6.6 percent from last year's 6.7 percent and to below 6.2 percent in 2018. Much of China's growth since the financial crisis has come from massive government-led stimulus spending on infrastructure. Investors are also showing a strong appetite for imports, especially for industrial commodities like iron ore and coal which is pushing up prices of these resources in the global markets. (more...)
