Rue21 Files For Bankruptcy As Retail Woes Drag On

Struggling teen apparel retailer Rue21, which already had announced it would close its stores at Valle Vista Mall, Sunrise Mall in Brownsville and at the Rio Grande Premium Outlets in Mercedes, filed for bankruptcy late Monday. Last month, rue21 began the process of closing approximately 400 underperforming stores in its 1,179 store fleet, and the Company may evaluate additional store closings as it continues to manage its real estate lease portfolio. In October past year, the Bank of England warned that life would turn hard for Britain's most vulnerable, as inflation was expected to rise due to a slump in the pound following the vote to exit the EU. 'Wage growth, which has been notably lacklustre of late, is seen picking up sharply next year. 'The pay squeeze we're now experiencing is set to continue throughout the year, resulting in a renewed phase of living standards stagnation over the coming years'. (more...)

Led by double-digit decline in the United Kingdom market, the number of new passenger cars registered in the European Union dropped ‐6.6% to 1,191,034 units in April 2017; attributed to the result of Easter falling in April this year. Economic confidence in countries using the euro was the strongest in nearly a decade in April, signaling more consumer spending in coming months. In 2014, Microsoft ended support for the highly popular Windows XP, released in 2001 and engineered beginning in the late 1990s, arguing that the software was out of date and wasn't built with modern security safeguards. If a more recent version of Windows is running on the computer and it stays up-to-date, it should not be vulnerable to the current attack or WannaCry. The vulnerability was first discovered by America's National Security Agency (NSA). Large parts of the United States and Canada are being afflicted by a coffee shortage as a result of a crash to Starbucks's computer systems. While growth slowed to 0.3 percent in the first quarter, the weakest in a year, the bank expects the figure to be revised up to 0.4 percent. Speaking at a press conference following the announcement, Carney said the Bank was "tolerating" an overshoot in inflation now as it was the result of the exchange rate adjusting ahead of Brexit negotiations.
