Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has warned Canada and the U.S. could suffer a "thickening" border as the Trump administration imposes new tariffs on softwood timber and trade tensions between the two countries escalate. "Those duties will be collected and they will be collected on a retroactive basis, going back 90 days, because it is 90 days ago that the Canadians were put on notice about this being an inappropriate process", he said. Volatility in the markets has fallen considerably after the French election's results, with the S&P 500 VIX Index, a measure of volatility in the S&P 500 Index, falling 2.4% to 10.30, its lowest level in 12 months. The S&P 500 was down 1.98 points or 0.08% at 2,397.31, easing from an all-time high of 2,401.36. Five of the 11 major S&P sectors were higher, while the typically defensive plays such as utilities and telecom services fell. (more...)

On a related note , it's worth noting that Tesla during its recent earnings conference call said that its team managed to recreate its own version of Mobileye's technology in just six months. An official message from Tesla reads, "Our primary goal is to make self-driving a reality and in order to make it possible, we are providing more data to the autonomous driving system in our cars". The settlement was reached the same day United Airlines announced multiple changes to improve customer experience, including offering a much greater financial incentive - up to $10,000 in travel certificates - for those who volunteer to change flights.
