The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said 12,059 cars were sold in Scotland - 17.5% down on a year ago. SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said he expected demand to stabilise this year. Cheap finance has been key to the success of the sector in recent years with up to 90 percent of cars sold using personal contract plans, whereby customers effectively rent a new vehicle for two to three years ... Net profit attributable to Viacom fell to $121 million, or 30 cents per share, in the company's second quarter ended March 31, from $303 million, or 76 cents per share, a year earlier. The network is being billed as a premium entertainment channel. Viacom says Paramount's Filmed Entertainment unit saw a 37% revenue bump to $895 million with an adjusted operating loss of $66 million, an improvement from last year's $136 million loss. (more...)

The House may again try to vote on health care as early as next week, about a month after opposition from moderates and conservatives forced Ryan to cancel a vote on the measure at the last minute. FED WATCH: Investors expect the Fed to keep the benchmark US interest rate on hold this month but are looking to a post-meeting statement for signs of when the next increase might come. The Fed has only raised interest rates three times in the last decade, most recently in March this year. Wednesday's statement underlined sentiment that the Fed will raise rates gradually. (more...)

Global stocks declined Wednesday ahead of a meeting of U.S. Fed funds futures, used by investors to place bets on the Fed's interest rate policy, showed 76% odds that the Fed would tighten policy by its June meeting, according to CME Group.
