In Singapore , oil refining profits dropped to two-year lows yesterday, in the latest sign that the industry is pumping too much fuel for the market to absorb. If production talks fail again this time, crude oil could see another major plunge in prices amid a massive flow of supplies from OPEC players and revival of USA production. (more...)

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 43 points, or 0.2%, to 18,495, while those for the S&P 500 index gained 3.80 points, or 0.2%, to 2,176. Britain's FTSE 100 was up 0.1 percent. The stock shed $2.34 to $38.53. Brent crude which is used to price global oils was down by 2.1% or 93 cents to $44.05 per barrel in London. (more...)

While the cloud division contributed just 4.7 percent of revenue in the March quarter, it's Alibaba's fastest-growing business and a primary driver of growth over the longer term. (more...)

"This isn't a Muslim thing, this is an ISIS thing", Trump insisted. Macy's , under pressure from activist investor Starboard Value LP, is working on partnerships to monetize its huge real estate portfolio, which includes landmark properties such as its Herald Square and Union Square stores in NY. The company plans to offset that loss in sales by cutting costs, even beyond shutting down these stores. It's not clear how many jobs will be impacted by these moves. (more...)

Babies with microcephaly often have smaller brains that might not have developed properly. Excluding charges related to store closings, the company earned 51 cents, which is above the 48 cent estimate from FactSet. For instance, Walmart announced plans in January to shut down 269 stores this year and just this week, inked a $3.3 billion deal to acquire Amazon rival Jet.com. (more...)

Rajan said it was too early to speculate whether the Goods and Services Tax Bill, which has been passed by both houses of Parliament, will have an inflationary impact, especially since the rate of tax is yet to be announced. The dollar has weakened in recent weeks after disappointing U.S. The Bank of England cut interest rates last week for the first time since 2009 in the wake of the country's vote to leave the European Union. The UK's FTSE index was trading higher by 0.30 percent, while French CAC 40 Index climbed 0.62 percent. The energy index gained 1.22 percent, with Exxon Mobil up 1.18 per cent and Schlumberger climbing 1.6 per cent. It was the strongest contributor to the S&P 500's loss. Shares of Walt Disney rose 2.2 percent to $98.75, after the company reported results overnight and bought a 33 percent stake in video-streaming firm BAMTech. (more...)

Delta spokesman Trebor Banstetter said that after the power outage, key systems and network equipment did not switch over to backups. Even brief outages can now snarl traffic and, as the Delta incident shows, those problems can go global in seconds.
