The U.S. government has pledged $19.8 million to help Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. pay for initial development of a Zika vaccine under a contract that could go up to $312 million. The company will develop a inactivated, adjuvanted, whole Zika virus vaccine, they said. Zika, a mosquito-borne virus tied to severe birth defects and nervous system problems, has been reported in 69 countries, including the US, since 2015, according to the World Health Organization. The sequencing analysis of the Zika virus found in two patients from an existing cluster in Aljunied Crescent/Sims Drive, showed that the virus was not imported from South America, the Ministry of Health (MOH) and NEA said.
