J&J Chief Scientific Officer Dr Paul Stoffels said he suspects a type of immune system reaction called a T-cell response is playing a protective role and may be helping to prevent severe disease. Some studies have suggested the variant may be able to evade antibodies produced by the body. Three-hundred-and-eighteen people succumbed to the virus in the past day, bringing the number of COVID-19 related deaths in the country to 43,951. (more...)

A UK-based epidemiologist has been coming across many COVID patients with oral problems, such as tongue enlargement and discoloration. The list of new coronavirus warning signs continues to grow. William Schaffner, professor of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, told ABC News. And more experts are encouraging people to buy KN95 masks or other medical-grade masks, as uncertainty about the new variants grows. He says wearing two of the disposable surgeons masks you often see could result in you drawing in more air from the sides, which means you might not be increasing your own ... (more...)

The results will raise questions about how highly-effective vaccines from Pfizer Inc/BioNTech, and Moderna Inc will do against new variants. Those trials, however, were conducted mainly in the USA and before new variants emerged. It has already been approved in the UK, Europe and many countries based on results of a separate trial. It states passengers on airplanes, trains, buses, subways, ships, ferries, taxis and ride-shares must wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth while getting on such vehicles, during the ride and while getting off. Federal agencies must submit plans no later than Friday to enforce a separate Biden order requiring masks in all federal building and on all federal lands. (more...)

The vaccine appears to maintain its protective ability across population groups and regions, including at a study site in Africa, where many infections are due to a new South African variant of the coronavirus. In the J&J trial, which was conducted in eight countries, 44% of participants were from the United States, 41% were from Central and South America and 15% were from South Africa. (more...)

Any travellers refusing to be tested will be subject to a fine of at least $750. There have been 51 cases of the United Kingdom variant confirmed, but suspected cases are still undergoing whole genome sequencing testing. The government had promised last summer that a program to test asymptomatic high school students would be introduced when schools reopened, but that never happened. (more...)

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has confirmed that Level 5 restrictions will remain in place until March 5. . It is unlikely any decision will be taken on schools today. Those quarantining at home can continue to exit the 14-day period early with a negative test for the virus on Day 5 or later. Due to Ireland's border with Northern Ireland, which can not be completely sealed, a "zero-Covid" strategy - which means eliminating the spread of infection between people in Ireland and putting in ... "Pfizer is very much aware of that and will. scale up their number (of deliveries) if that is what is required", Fortin said. An N95 mask filters 95% of airborne particles and, if worn correctly, it is the gold standard, but it is not recommended for the average person because there is a shortage and comes with some requirements to make them work.
